چکیده

I studied growth and maturity by mark-recapture in a central Arkansas population of Opheodrys aestivus. Growth rate was a decreasing linear function of body size and differed according to sex. Females grew faster than males and reached a greater size. Mean body sizes of first year cohorts, size plots of known age snakes, and mean body sizes of the largest snakes were in agreement with size-age curves developed from growth rate equations. Males first bred in the spring at 21 mo of age. About half of the females first bred in the spring at 21 mo of age and half the following spring at 33 mo. Growth and age at maturity were similar to other colubrid and elapid species of similar size.

Sexual size dimorphism and growth plasticity in snakes: an experiment on the Western Diamond-backed Rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox).

We conducted an experiment to examine the effects of sex and food intake on growth, mass gain, and attainment of sexual maturity in Western Diamond-backed Rattlesnakes (Crotalus atrox). We also measured testosterone levels to determine whether testosterone might be involved in the male-biased sexual size dimorphism observed in this species. We collected neonate rattlesnakes and raised them in t...

Gorging on gobies: beneficial effects of alien prey on a threatened vertebrate

Invasive species often have rapid and far-reaching negative impacts on populations and ecological communities. These effects are most common when invasive species have few competitors or predators. Although higher level carnivores do consume invasive species, quantitative effects of new and abundant food sources on predators have rarely been documented and, as a consequence, potentially positiv...

Effect of Maturity Stage of Olive Fruit on Quality of Olive Products

This is the first-ever study conducted to standardize the maturity stage of olive fruit for development of olive murabba. Olive fruit was harvested at three different maturity stages including lemon green, semi-ripened and fully ripened stages for postharvest processing. Most prominent quality parameters of the product were studied for all maturity stages. Olive productprepared from semi-ripene...
